Building Confidence through Volunteering

By Joyce Zhong, Grade 10 Student

When I was in Grade 8, I arrived in Toronto from Winnipeg and heard about the 40 volunteer hours that we needed to complete in Ontario to graduate. One of my friends introduced me to CICS's volunteer program. My friends and I applied to volunteer in the Saturday Enrichment Program. To be honest, I was nervous at first since it was my first volunteer experience, but as soon as I learned more about the program and started making friends I began to enjoy volunteering. I was working as a student assistant, teaching students that needed extra help and helping the teachers organize their materials. This experience helped me to build my self-confidence and patience when communicating with others. I had a great year in this program.
