Job Title:                   Newcomer Youth Mental Health Worker- Chinese speaking

Team/Unit:                 Newcomer Mental Health Program

Location:                    IRC and other locations as assigned

Hours:                         35 hours per week; require to work irregular hours including evenings, Saturdays and some holidays

Salary Range:            $57,330 to $64,525

Current Rate:             $31.50 per hour

Status:                        unionized 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·   Provide individual short-term supportive counselling for newcomer youth through empowerment-oriented, equity-building, anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework philosophies and practice;

·   Provide mental health assessment and evidence-informed crisis intervention to newcomer youth who are in emotional distress;

·    Address barriers that impact on the newcomer youth’s ability to access mental health services and assist individuals in developing and implementing effective crisis management strategies;

·      Work collaboratively and flexibly with youth and their families as well as cross-sector service providers in developing individualized and effective, trauma-informed, strengths-based service plans for youth’s recovery and integration into the society, crisis intervention/prevention, referrals to other services, etc.

·      Provide case management by coordinating with the appropriate additional supports and services needed to ensure optimum care within the boundaries of confidentiality and disclosure;

·      Make appropriate referrals to longer-term community support services and/or youth mental health services as required;

·      Plan, organize and facilitate group activities, support groups and orientation sessions on youth mental health-related topics;

·      Conduct outreach activities in newcomer communities to increase awareness of the service and raise awareness of mental health;

·      Participate in providing education to community service providers and other stakeholders regarding culturally responsive service;

·      Collaborate closely internally and with other social service agencies to facilitate effective delivery of mental health support services in the community;

·      Support management and team members internally to create and maintain a positive, harmonious work environment;

·    Keep the team updated on all new information in relations to youth mental health, and keep abreast of information by tracking government and school policies and community resources in order to effectively inform and refer clients;

·      Keep and maintain clients records in a timely and professional manner;

·   Complete administrative documentation accurately and on a timely basis. Examples include updating of data systems, summarizing statistics of service, written reporting on project related activities, etc.;

·      Establish and maintain professional working relationship and communication with internal and external groups.

Qualifications:

·      A master’s degree in Social Work or equivalent training in a related health discipline. Relevant combination of training and experience will also be considered;

·      Membership is in good standing in the related Provincial regulatory association, such as RSW. (Registration and good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers)

·      Knowledge of intersectional, equity-building, anti-oppressive and anti-racist practices relating to supporting at-risk youth, mental health, community development and social-emotional learning is required.

·    Experience working with newcomer youth, preferably adolescents and young adults, with knowledge of community resources and services relating to youth mental health services, as well as Ontario Mental Health Act;

·      Excellent knowledge of cultural and social backgrounds of immigrants and refugees; including their settlement and integration issues both general and specific;

·   Demonstrated commitment to high standards of culturally responsive service delivery within an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework;

·  Ability to observe boundaries, engage in appropriate emotional regulation, refrain from dual relationships with clients, maintain confidentiality, and engage in reasonable self-care strategies designed to reduce stress by balancing work/life responsibilities;

·      Respect all aspects of diversity; ability to represent clients’ needs in program / service negotiation;

·      Proven abilities in program organization, supportive counselling, service referral, community outreach; working with diverse cultures and all age groups;

·      Experienced in problem solving, team building, decision making, and conflict management; 

·      Experienced in resource coordination and case management techniques; 

·    Excellent communication skills, oral and written proficiency in English, as well as a second language commonly used by clientele, i.e. Chinese;

·   Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to operate effectively within the organization and externally. This includes but is not limited to procedural instructions, team work, communication etc.; 

·      Ability to work in a diverse, multi-cultural environment;

·      Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and in different locations as needed;

·      Proficient in Microsoft suites, social media platforms and client-record database.

  Other Requirements:

·       Ability to perform some physical activities (e.g. lifting and loading program materials and office equipment);

·       A negative result in Vulnerable Sector Screening is mandatory;

·       Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a car to carry out duties is preferred.
