Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Implement procedures in the Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) program in accordance with the program philosophy that supports the development of the individual child and the settlement of the child and family;
· Ensure that the facility and activities meet the needs of the children, as well as the health and safety requirements set out in the CNC Requirements;
· Implement program activities to meet the needs of young children;
· Monitor the site and daily activities to ensure safety is achieved to the highest standards; provide early disclosure on issues / risks;
· Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits;
· Work in collaboration with other CNC staff and front-line workers;
· Provide services that are culturally sensitive and supportive of the CNC philosophy and goals;
· Communicate with parents and provide updates on the children’s progress; assist parents with information that facilitate the smooth settlement of the entire family;
· Work with team members to create a positive and welcoming environment;
· Comply with policies, standards, guidelines, and controls to meet CMAS monitoring requirements; apply policies and controls fairly and consistently;
· Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research;
· Implement measures to ensure competent handling and utilization of materials and resources with the highest degree of integrity and diligence;
· Keep abreast of information and training provided by CMAS.
Qualifications:
· Certificate in Early Childcare Assistant;
· Knowledge of behaviour management theory, strategies, and techniques;
· Knowledge of Child Care and Early Years Act;
Experience and knowledge working in a formal setting with children of the ages that will be cared for, specifically between the ages of 19 months to 6 years;
· Oral and written proficiency in English (minimum CLB Level 5 in Listening and Speaking; Level 4 in Reading and Writing); oral and written proficiency in a second language an asset;
· Excellent knowledge of cultural and social backgrounds of newcomer children and families, including their settlement and integration needs, both general and specific;
· Proven abilities in supervising young children, working with diverse cultures and all age groups of children;
· Demonstrated skills and experience in team building, decision making, delegation, conflict management and problem solving;
· Knowledge of information gathering tools and techniques and the ability to gather and analyze information in order to derive conclusions;
· Ability to manage time and meet deadlines;
· Intermediate level with Microsoft Office, email and internet.
Other requirements:
· A record of health assessment which demonstrates candidates’ compliance with Ontario’s immunization and tuberculosis control program;
· Valid CPR and First Aid Certification;
· Vulnerable sector police reference check is mandatory.
