Position Summary:
Summary of the position / Nature and Scope
CICS’s Early Years Program aims to support newcomer families with young children (0-6 years) to settle
and integrate as contributing members of Canadian society by fostering healthy parent-child relationships;
strengthening children’s communication, social and learning skills; enhancing children’s adaptation and
involvement in social activities; and supporting school-readiness. This includes programs for
parents/caregivers, to equip them with the appropriate information, skills and resources to understand the
Ontario school system and help prepare their children for school.
This position supports the development and implementation of day-to-day early years programming,
ensuring a safe, stimulating environment where young children can learn and thrive. On an ongoing
basis, the position incumbent is required to assist in ensuring that the facility and activities meet the
needs of children and the health and safety requirements set by the funder, including ensuring quality
is consistent with other CICS locations.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
• Assist in developing, planning and implementing programs for families and children ages 0-6.
• Supervise children’s daily activities and routines, including preparing snack, washroom routine,
facilitating children’s learning activities and classroom management.
• Respond sensitively to the cultural heritage, values and individual experiences of children
participants.
• Prepare program space for activities and maintain the tidiness and cleanliness of the program
space, including environmental cleaning and disinfection of toys.
• Prepare materials for children’s activities and parenting workshops.
• Build and maintain positive rapport with adult participants and be responsive to the needs of
newcomer families.
• Provide information about community resources and services available for families.
Refer clients/caregivers to community resources, including child development, parenting,
settlement services, health supports, etc.
• Work collaboratively with Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE) and volunteers in daily
early years operation.
• Coordinate purchase of program materials and supplies in accordance with budget guidelines.
• Support administration tasks, such as identifying new collaboration opportunities, coordinating
collaboration with community partners, registering clients for programs, preparing reports and
promotional materials, data entry/records maintenance etc.
• Any other duties assigned by the program manager as needed.
Qualifications (Education/Knowledge/Skills/Experience)
• Minimum college diploma in a related field (e.g. Child & Youth, Early Childhood Education,
Family/Education Support, Social Services etc.)
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, preferably in a setting of EarlyON Child & Family
Centres, performing a comparable role.
• Knowledge of cultural and social backgrounds of newcomer children and families, including their
settlement and integration needs, both general and specific.
• Proven abilities in program planning, supervising young children, working with families with
diverse cultures.
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written proficiency in English; ability to speak a second
language an asset, preferably Cantonese and/or Mandarin.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work and communicate effectively within the organization
and externally.
• Demonstrated team player and able to work independently.
• Ability to plan, conduct information analysis and prepare reports.
• Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities.
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office, knowledge of social media apps
Other Requirements
• Current First Aid and CPR certification.
• Current health assessment including immunization and documentation of negative test result for
Tuberculosis, to be maintained on an ongoing basis as required by Public Health.
• A negative result in the Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Working Conditions and Effort
• The work of this position is mostly performed in a classroom setting, occasionally outdoor, as
well as work in a typical office environment;
• The work requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving:
▪ Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of objects such as furniture, equipment, materials, toys;
▪ Lifting and carrying children;
• Some combination of bending, kneeling, reaching and crouching;
